Before my parents got Cocoa, our now seven year-old pug, I never had much interest in dogs. Cocoa, however, changed my life. She was so virile and full of life, so eager to play and make all of us happy. Whether she was chasing a toy we threw for her or sleeping in one of her tiny little personalized dog beds we bought for her, Cocoa lit up every day. She was always right there by the door whenever my sister and I got home from school, and she watched out the window every day at 5:00 until my mother arrived home from work. Cocoa is still a huge part of our family. Even though my sister and I now live out of state, every time we come visit our mother and father, Cocoa is bursting with excitement to greet us. I never thought I would say it, but I have become one of the biggest dog lovers I know, and I owe it all to our beautiful little Cocoa.

Along with millions of Americans, my favorite show on TV is The Office. Why? Because it makes fun of all the people you are most likely working with. Take me to any place I have ever worked, and I can find you every character on the show. My favorite part of the show is Jim playing pranks Dwight. I just sit there and say “I could do that to ________ in our office”. They turn situations that would normally turn into a HR nightmare at a real business and create hilarious scenes. No matter how bad a day you have watching The Office can turn it around

I live in the city of Nairobi. It is the capital city of Kenya and also the country’s largest city. The name Nairobi is of Maasai origin meaning cool waters. They must have named it cool waters due to the Nairobi River that snakes across the city. The city was once called the green city under the sun. Nairobi prides itself as the only city in the world to have a national park. It’s the business hub of East and Central Africa with many international organizations having their headquarters in Nairobi. Just like most cities in the third world, it suffers severe congestion problems due to poor planning with most of its infrastructure dating back to pre-colonial Kenya. Despite its perils, when you visit Nairobi you will get the feel of being in any European city and have access to most if not all basic necessities of life within close reach. I have lived in Nairobi for over six years while attending school and working. Life in Nairobi is affordable, exciting and services are easily accessible. Nairobi is also not very far from great tourist destinations like the Nairobi National park, Hell’s gate, Mt. Longonot, and View point to the Great Rift Valley. For all its valuable traits, the most important reasons why I like Nairobi is that I get to call it Home.

My weekend consisted of working, as most of my weekends do because it’s my regular schedule, in a call center taking inbound calls for cell phone technical support. I handle several different carriers and thus need to know a good bit about the phones including what accessories are included in new shipments and then walking people through step by (sometimes very painful) step to fix whatever the malfunction may be at the moment. I work ten hours shifts and Saturday last was no exception and we were fielding a steady stream of calls. For the most part, I had pretty standard calls – my battery won’t charge, my display is scrambled, my calls drop a lot, I don’t like the color…so on and so forth it goes. It’s a stressful job for some because you can’t do everything you WANT to do and many times it’s just not fast enough or good enough for the customer.
