Why to Watch Friends Repeats

September 18th, 2009

Even though the TV show Friends is no longer being made, you can still find repeats on several times a day, on different channels. Since it was on so long, it’s really like the Friends characters are YOUR friends; it seems like you know them. It may not be the most intellectual humor, but it’s familiar and comforting. The three main female and male characters have distinct personalities, but all get along (most of the time). It’s so nice to know that they have each other throughout the years, and all the problems they face in life. While it may not always be realistic, it’s nice to know they’re there for you as an escape and for entertainment.

Teaching As My Profession

September 14th, 2009

Each one of us has different interests and priorities. We choose our career and profession depending upon our qualification, salary and ambition. If we take up a profession we love, every day would be full of enthusiasm whereas otherwise it could end up making us feel miserable. For me teaching has always been my first choice. The role a teacher plays in shaping young minds is incredible. You have the power to train youngsters to become very talented, educated, kind and respectful citizens. You can try to put in the right principles and attitude towards life. As you know we have plenty of problems to face, so, if the children are made strong individuals, things will be much easier and taken in the right perspective. Moreover, it is simply fun being with children. You tend to forget your problems and enjoy with them. A teacher can understand the nature and interests of her students and channel them in the right direction, to excel in their talents. It is excellent to be their pillar of strength. Imagine meeting your students when they grow up to be responsible individuals. Teaching is indeed a noble profession.

A Successful Day

September 11th, 2009

I received an email today containing random thoughts from people in their twenties. One of the thoughts read, “You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you’ve made up your mind that you just aren’t doing anything productive for the rest of the day.” I can identify with this statement because I reached just such a point yesterday around 11:30AM when I looked over my to do list and saw that everything left on the list was actually a project item and not a daily item. With four hours left in my work day, I decided to clean off my desk. Since I am a piler and not a filer, this was no small task, but by the end of the day, a large portion of my desk was visible for the first time in weeks. After returning a few calls, I packed up my stuff, called the day a success, and left.

Geisha

One of my most cherished treasures is a set of two silk-screened paintings of geisha. When I was a teenager I found them rolled up in my great-grandmother’s lingerie drawer after her death, along with a short note. The note described purchasing the screens while she was on her honeymoon in China, shortly before the Boxer Rebellion made such a trip impossible for holiday-hungry Victorians. For years I carried these screens with me from apartment to apartment, still carefully rolled up and kept out of sunlight, until the week of my own wedding. My aunt was helping me sort through some things and I came across the screens and opened them up for her to see. She seemed to love them a lot, so although I also loved them I decided to give them to her, as she had the finances to ensure their preservation. It was one of the most touching surprises of my life to receive the screens back in the mail a few weeks later, carefully preserved behind glass and framed in gilded bamboo. This wedding gift of several generations still stands proudly as the focal point of my living room no matter where I live, and it will always hold this special place in my home.
