One of the funniest things that I have ever seen was my mother sliding across the patio in the backyard on a soapy film. We were in the process of moving from one house to another and there was a lot of emotion and tension involved in the move for both of us. One of the issues that had come to the fore that morning was that I had failed to wash the patio chairs as I had been asked. I was a teenager and I did not see the need to wash chairs that were just going to be moved, but my mother insisted as she left the house that morning. I decided the easiest way to wash the chairs was to work up a lather using detergent on each of them and then merely hose them down with the garden hose. I did that, accomplished the task and thought no more of it other than to grunt at my mother when she came home that I had completed the chore. I did not realize that the soap had left a slippery residue on the patio until my mother went dashing out the back door to get my sister’s bike form the storage shed in the backyard. As she stepped out the back door, her leg went slipping out from under her and she awkwardly slid across the patio, landing on her knee with a thud. My sister and I could not stop laughing at the sight. It was a slapstick routine in real life. My mother did not see the humor in the situation, especially as she had bruised her knees badly. For the rest of the move, she could only shuffle around, slowly and painfully, unable to bend her knees very much at all. As for my sister and me, we burst into laughter anew even as we watched her painfully shuffle around.

Dogs are such lovable creatures that you can’t help but pamper your dog every once in while. We choose our dogs so carefully keeping in mind the type of the dog we need. So taking care of dogs is very important. Giving your dog a bath, trimming his hair, taking him to the local vet all becomes a routine in the long run. You can spend a lot of time just playing with your dog. You can have fun just by dressing up your dog, buying things for him like a beautiful dog belt or if you take him in your car for a ride every once a while you can buy a beautiful car seat covers for him. Dogs are great stress busters. It’s worth spending on such faithful creatures after all the love they shower on us.

Last week, I visited my best friend who now lives about an hour away from my current home. Although an hour may not seem like much of a trip, between our busy schedules and the time and distance involved, we really only get to see other a couple of times a year. Last week, however, was special because I attended a baby shower for my friend’s daughter- in-law who is expecting a baby in a couple of months. I could not help but think back to our friendship, which has lasted for over forty years. We were friends as young girls, we were friends as young women, young mothers, young professionals, and now as not-so-young mothers and, in her case, she is even soon to be a grandmother. Yet when we get together, it is as though we are girls again. We share the same frame of reference for many issues or ideas. For example, we will go shopping and see a picture, commenting simultaneously on how much it reminds us of the party invitations we sent out so many years ago. In some ways, I suppose, I did more last year than attend a baby shower. I actually journeyed through many years arrive at last week.

I think the most expensive purchase I have ever made was to buy a Louis Vuitton overnight bag for my adult daughter. She had been admiring them for a long time and a special occasion was coming up. I must confess that I was amazed at how much money I was spending on a single item of luggage – and it did not even have wheels, an important factor I consider in purchasing overnight bags for myself. I hemmed, I hawed, and then I took the plunge. When the day came for me to present my daughter with her gift, I waited with breathless anticipation as she opened the present. Would she like it? Would it be all that she had hoped or would there be a hint of disappointment? After all of this, would she even really use it or would she eventually tire of it because it did not have wheels? Fortunately, my daughter was thrilled with the gift and very much appreciated the sacrifice that I had made to get it for her, because it was far more expensive than just about any other purchase I had ever made. It has been several years since my daughter received her “Louis” and she still takes him with her happily whenever she travels even though he doesn’t have the all important wheels. All in all, therefore, I think my little splurge was worth it.
